One of the most common faults at this time of year is boilers losing pressure.

You've had your heating off for a while, you go to put it on and a code flashes up saying either 'E119' or 'E118'. Once the pressure drops below 0.5 on your pressure gauge, the boiler will stop working.

Frozen pipes can also stop your boiler from working.

All you need is a kettle and the problem can be solved.

If at any point you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, you will need to call Cadent on 0800 111 999 as soon as possible.

If you have a power cut or electricity supply issue, you will need to contact Western Power on 0800 6783 105.

Most of our properties have a second form of heating such as an electric fire or immersion heater.

If you need to use either of these, it is important to check them before our office closes so that, if your boiler goes down, you know there is something in place.

If you or someone close to you has a lifeline system, now would be a good time to check it's in full working order.

You can do this by pressing your pendant or the 'help' button on the unit.

Unfortunately, more people are needing to use food banks these days.

This means that many food banks are struggling to keep enough stock for those who need it and are, in some cases, having to turn people away.

Next time you're doing a big fod shop, why not pick up a couple of extra items to support them and the people who depend on them? Find your local food bank.

Winter brings bigger bills for all of us, so it's a time when it's particularly important to have a household budget.

  • Think about your priority bills (for example rent and utility bills). There can be serious consequences if you don't keep up with these so it's important to sort them out first.
  • Take note of your income and outgoings. If you have any direct debits or standing orders, make sure that you know what is coming out and when so that you can be ready and make sure there is enough in your account to cover them.
  • Use a spending diary. You can find one here that will help you keep track of everything you spend.

We all struggle from time to time and the Christmas period is particularly difficult. With all the added expenditure Christmas brings, people can find themselves in a position where they have little to no money to feed themselves or their families.

There’s a lot of stigma around the use of food banks and pride stops people from accessing these services. However, staff and volunteers at food banks are not judgemental and they make no preconceptions about those using them. Often, they are giving a little back after needing the service themselves and so understand the courage it takes to ask for help. They want you to feel welcome and alleviate any concerns or anxiety you may have.
