Bank accounts and credit unions

Here is some basic information about bank accounts and credit unions.

Bank Accounts

If you're earning a wage or claiming benefits, you'll probably need a bank account.

When you open an account you will need to provide proof of:

  • who you are
  • where you live
  • your student status, if relevant

and complete an application form. Some banks will require you to pay in some money.

Some banks will complete a ‘credit check’ if you set up an account that allows you to borrow money or go overdrawn. To do this the back may want to get references from your previous banks or lenders.

With so many current and saving accounts on offer it is good to shop around to find the account for you.

Credit unions

Credit unions are financial co-operatives owned and controlled by their members. They offer savings and good value loans.

Futures Homescape works with Erewash Credit Union (ECU), Amber Valley Borough Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) to offer this service to tenants and residents in Amber Valley.

ECU can provide low interest loans to those who have been refused credit elsewhere, and may be on benefits or low wage. The credit union is fully insured, so it’s a great place to save too!

Advice sessions run frequently at Amber Valley Borough Council office in Ripley and at the Council office in Alfreton.

Ripley: 10am to 12.30pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

Alfreton: 10.30am to 2pm every Thursday
