Peonies win prizes for tenants

Green-fingered residents have reaped the rewards of keeping their gardens well-tended after being named the winners of a local competition.

Run by Futures Homescape, the annual competition encourages well-seasoned and new gardeners to enter their efforts in one of four categories.

Best individual garden winners with certificate

Best Individual Garden went to Martyn and Janet Gration from Heanor, while Michael Green from Ripley picked up Best Pot or Basket.Best Communal Garden went to Linda Stevens from Belper, and Colin Hicklin from Heanor won Best Edible Garden.

Each winner received a certificate and gardening vouchers and second and third prizes were also awarded in each category.

Martyn and Janet Gration lived in a flat for 10 years before moving to their bungalow.Janet said: “Having a space outdoors was like a dream come true, and we soon became keen gardeners.

“We like to dot pots and hanging baskets around the garden and use outdoor ornaments to complement the plants and flowers.

“I’ve got chronic arthritis so my husband has helped to make the garden more accessible by raising the beds with pebbles and bark.Gardening is a great reason to get out and enjoy the fresh air, and it brings a real sense of joy to our lives. We’ve even helped the neighbours pot up a few hanging baskets, and they love the way it brightens their mood.”

Colin Hicklin, aged 74, grows beetroots, lettuce, runner beans, onions, leeks and tomatoes in his back garden. He said: “Because I give most of what I grow away, it’s something I can share with my family, friends and neighbours.

“I live in a bungalow so I don’t have a huge back garden, but it’s surprising what you can grow in a small space.”

Sarah Whattam, community development manager at Futures Homescape, said: “We received twice as many entries as last year, which is a good indication of residents taking pride in where they live and looking after their surroundings.

“These tenants are a real inspiration and their stories help to show how gardening can bring joy to individuals and neighbourhoods as a whole. We’d like to thank everyone who entered and look forward to receiving more new entries again next year.”
