Community development

What is the difference between community development and resident involvement and what does it mean for you?

What is Community Development?

Community Development is about building active and sustainable communities based on social equality and mutual respect. To do this we will identify the strengths, needs and responsibilities of the wider community and provide opportunities for involvement to influence and develop a positive, strong and inclusive community. We will build the capacity of residents to deliver projects and to sustain them within their communities.

What is Resident Involvement?

Resident Involvement allows tenants to have a say in the decisions that affect their homes and communities. Tenants are encouraged to give feedback and become actively involved in housing and local area issues which may affect them directly. When people become more aware of the issues which affect their lives they are encouraged and more determined to take action to address them. Resident Involvement breaks down barriers by including the community in key decisions from the beginning. Residents can be involved in ways that suit them and at a level and pace they want

Principles of Resident Involvement

Our approach to resident involvement is underpinned by the following principles which outline the different ways tenants can be involved.

Decision Making

Giving you the capacity to make decisions about the way we deliver our services, challenging our performance and driving forward service improvement.

Involving You

This might involve you testing our services, attending our events or participating in our projects e.g. mystery shopping or tenant quality inspector

Consulting With You

Consulting means bringing a complete or partially completed document, project or service plan to you and asking you for your comments, compliments or criticism to improve it. We will do this either in person, over the telephone or in writing.

Engaging With You

We want to engage with you at different levels and with projects and initiatives that you have an interest in e.g. walkabout Wednesday’s and family fun days.We want to make our opportunities accessible to everyone at a time and place that suits them.

Informing You

We will keep you informed what services and projects we deliver through a range of methods e.g. tenant newsletter, leaflets, website and the media. This is key to helping you decide what interests you, when you want to have a say and how it will affect you.
