MP pledges support to Daventry youth

A youth group campaigning for a stronger voice in shaping local services has rallied support from their local MP following a visit to Westminster.

Local MP Chris Heaton-Harris has pledged his support to members of the Daventry & District Housing Youth Board after a meeting at his House of Commons office on Monday (December 19).

Arriving for an official tour of the House of Commons, the group, aged 13 to 17, went behind the scenes with a chance to put their questions to Mr Heaton-Harris on the Members’ Terrace.

The board presented a video on what Daventry residents think of young people before outlining the results of a consultation on local services which highlighted a need for more leisure facilities in the town centre.

Expressing his support, Mr Heaton-Harris gave insights into attracting big brands to the high street and advice on how to campaign effectively for changes in their local area.

The meeting comes at the close of Daventry District Council’s public consultation on its vision for 2040.

Commenting on the visit, Chris Heaton-Harris said: “It is important that the young people of Daventry make their views known on the matters that will affect them in the future. Daventry is a great town with a bright future – and that future could be even brighter if young people contribute to the debate on the town’s development.

“It was a pleasure to meet the DDH Youth Board. They just prove that Daventry has masses of potential.”

The Youth Board’s priorities for the year ahead include promoting youth services through a Daventry Youth Day and supporting older and vulnerable people in a bid to lessen the intergenerational gap.

Youth Board member Robyn King said: “We are really grateful to Mr Heaton-Harris for taking the time to give us a tour of the Commons. We found it really interesting and encouraging to hear about plans for Daventry and how we can help shape its future.”
