Run by Daventry & District Housing in partnership with Groundwork Northamptonshire, the life skills course was designed to help its tenants gain the skills required to live independently in their own home.
Sessions included home maintenance and DIY, household budgeting and first aid, as well as cooking, CV writing and advice on looking for jobs.
Since attending the course, two out of the five students have secured jobs.
Tenant Richard Wood said: “It was a really interesting course.I especially enjoyed the DIY, and learning to wall paper paste was really handy.
“The first aid module is really helpful too as it’s a transferrable skill that I will be able to use in the future.
“It’s something that would be really useful for younger tenants who might be setting up in their own home for the first time.”
On completing the course all the students were presented with certificates and a home starter tool kit.
Sarah Sims, community development officer at Daventry & District Housing, said: “This course was about helping people to develop the skills needed to run a home and live independently.People assume that things like decorating and DIY skills come naturally, but we all need someone to pass them on.
“We wanted to test the types of skills we can pass on by working with our partners, and we’re delighted with the results.
“The sessions have helped to improve self-confidence and strengthen the relationship we have with our tenants. The CV writing and job hunting sessions proved particularly useful, and we’re using this feedback to plan the next course.”
